The importance of quality education resources for all ages is reflected in Christian County.
Pana Community Unit School District No. 8 includes three elementary schools, a junior high school, and a new senior high school. There are four private schools in the area. There is also the Pana Learning Center, an alternative school for students to earn a GED. Taylorville Unit School District No. 3 includes 6 elementary schools, a junior high school and high school. There are two private schools in Taylorville and several preschools located close to the business district.
Christian County has the unique opportunity of having two outstanding community colleges, Lincoln Land Community College and Lake Land College, providing higher education to residents of their district. Both community colleges play a key role in Christian Countys economic development efforts and offer services to business and industry that are essential to their success. These services range from traditional course offerings onsite or off campus, workforce development training, and those services provided through the Illinois Employment and Training Centers.
Lincoln Land Community College, located in the Industrial Park and Enterprise Zone is available for Technical and/or Administrative Education for the Taylorville area. Capable of a wide range of Educational Programs for the training or retraining of employees. In addition, Individualized Business Assistance Programs can be implemented to meet specific needs, on campus or at business sites.
Serving the Pana area in Christian County, the Lake Land College Center for Business and Industry plays a leading role in providing employee training and development services to regional employers. The Center maintains high standards for training program assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation. An experienced staff and broad range of services ensure responsiveness to a variety of training needs. The Center is strategically staffed to provide customized training "on demand" in four critical areas of need within business and industry. These include Quality and Continuous Process Improvement, Technical Skills for Manufacturing including a mobile, state-of-the-art lab with Mechanical, Electrical, Fluid Power, and Process Control equipment, Organizational and Leadership Development and Computer Software Applications. The Center provides extensive support to area business including: documenting work standards, producing DACUM job profiles, writing training and technical manuals, facilitating live process improvement projects, conducting certification testing, facilitating meetings and problem-solving sessions, and providing classroom and meeting space.
Additionally, the College offers both traditional technical and pre-baccalaureate courses in Pana, at more than 20 off campus sites and on campus. More than 120 online courses are available to students worldwide. Courses may also be customized to meet the specific needs of a business and may be taught onsite. Future plans include the construction of the Western Region Advanced Technical Center in Pana, which will house a variety of technical and pre-baccalaureate programs and other courses of study including selected services offered by The Center for Business and Industry.
Other universities include University of Illinois at Springfield, Millikin University, Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine and Springfield College located within 25 to 35 miles of the communities located in Christian County. Eastern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Champaign are located within 50 miles of Christian County.
